What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is an ancient Japanese therapy following similar principles to acupuncture by working on a system of energy channels or ‘meridians’, each meridian connecting with an organ. The pressure is applied by using thumbs, palms and elbows. There are gentle stretching techniques to stimulate the meridians and rebalance energy (‘Ki’ in Japanese) in order to promote good health. Physically this has the effect of stimulating the circulation and flow of lymphatic fluid, working on both divisions of the autonomic nervous system, helping to release toxins and deep seated tension from the muscles and stimulating the hormone system.
